Cowgirls milers get gold at Uvalde area meet

UVALDE – The varsity McMullen County Cowboys and Cowgirls track teams traveled to Uvalde April 16 for the area meet.

As a team, the Cowboys were area runners-up, totaling 104 points to meet champion Rocksprings’ 124. Logan Ridgeway was the high point boy for the Cowboys, totaling 37 points.

Ridgeway was the silver medalist in long jump, totaling 19 feet, 2 inches, while Colton McCartney took bronze at 19-0. Devin Naylor earned the silver in shot put, throwing 41-9. Naylor threw 125-9 in discus to earn a silver medal, while Garrett Blaha finished sixth at 90-4. Dustin Goodrum was fourth in triple jump, totaling 38-7.

Ridgeway earned the silver medal in high jump, jumping 5-8, while Dustin Allen took bronze with a jump of 5-8. Naylor finished fourth in the 100-meter run with a time of 12.08 seconds. Tyler Allen earned the bronze in the 800 with a time of 2:13. Ridgeway took silver in the 110 hurdles, clocking in at 17.37 seconds, while Goodrum ran 17.96 seconds to finish with the bronze and Cayden Turner turned in a time of 19.41 seconds for fourth place.

Ridgeway also was the silver medalist in the 300 hurdles with a time of 43.74 seconds, while Turner was fourth in 45.13 seconds and Goodrum finished sixth in 46.56 seconds. The 1,600 relay team of McCartney, Ridgeway, Naylor and Tyler Allen finished with the bronze medal in 3:47.

The Cowgirls finished third as a team in the overall standings, with 96 points to champion Rocksprings’ 109. Makinna Serrata was the high point girl for the Cowgirls, totaling 35.

Serrata won the long jump, totaling 17-0. Serrata was the silver medalist in triple jump, totaling 35-4, while Brenda Beyer placed fifth at 33-1. Baily Dawson was fourth in high jump, totaling 4-4, while Erin Atkinson jumped 4-2 for fifth place and Maria Ravara finished sixth at 4-0.

Serrata threw 109-1 to finish with the silver medal in discus, and Hallie Taylor finished sixth with a throw of 90-3. Beyer took the bronze in the 800 with a time of 2:39. Taylor won the 100 hurdles at 17.47 seconds, while Dawson finished with the bronze at 19.02 seconds. Taylor was the silver medalist in the 300 hurdles, clocking a time of 52.73 seconds.

Beyer was fourth with a time of 53.97 seconds, and Dawson finished sixth at 59.93 seconds. Serrata finished fourth in the 200 with a time of 28.44 seconds. Ravara was sixth in the 400 at 1:14. The 1,600 relay team of Serrata, Taylor, Caroline McClaugherty and Beyer won the gold medal with a time of 4:34.

Athletes who finished in the top four individually or as a team advanced to the regional meet. McMullen County sent 13 total athletes to the regional meet, which was held at Sam Houston State University in Huntsville Friday and Saturday, April 27-28.
