Lieutenant Colonel William Barrett Travis Essay Contest

Kimberly Kreider-Dusek (our County Attorney) and Karin Swenson graciously donated a replica of William Barrett Travis’s letter called “Victory or Death” to McMullen County through the Alamo Letter Society in order to carry out the incredible mission the society set out to accomplish. 

Lieutenant Colonel William Barrett Travis wrote this letter to President Sam Houston asking for reinforcements during The Battle of the Alamo. Though the reinforcements were not enough to turn the tide, this letter, and the actions of the 32 men with Lt. Col. Travis, showed true heroism!

In addition, Mrs. Dusek and Mrs. Swenson are hosting an essay contest with a prize of $220 for each age division, which is the amount of words that was in Travis’s letter. 

*The Contest will be open to 5th grade through 12th grade and essays will need to be submitted to Mrs. Bruce by October 15th.

Divisions: 5th/6th, 7th/8th, 9th-12th.

There will be a dedication held at the Courthouse on November 7th at 10 a.m.  A descendant of Davy Crockett will be there to read the letter then a resident will reenact delivering the letter, horeseback, from town in traditional garments.

Winners from each age group will be announced and given the opportunity to read their essays, and refreshments with sweet treats will be provided.
