McMullen County ISD held its annual Science Fair on Thursday, Jan. 31 in the Old and New gyms. Students from seventh- 12th grade competed against one another with seventh and eighth graders in the Old Gym and high school participants in the New Gym. Projects ranged from testing bacteria to collisions and explosions.

The seventh and eighthgrade judges were Dale Patterson from McMullen County and Eric Halfmann from San Miguel Power Plant. The freshman and sophomores competed against one another with judges Jess Swaim and Joe Cantu, both of 6S Engineering, while the juniors and seniors competed against one another with Blain Patterson from Mc- Mullen County and Stevo Franklin from Simco Construction as their judges.

The community along with staff and fellow students came together to support and look at all the hard work these McMullen Co. students put into their projects. Prizes were given out to the top three in each division and then the top two in each division competed for Grand Champion. First place in each division received $150 with recipients being eighth graders Ryliegh Kuehlem and Emily Measels with Iron in Cereal, sophomore Kylie Measels with Electrolytes, and junior Reagan Moon with Which Bullet Exerts the Most Work. Second place in each division received $100. Winners were seventh graders Jody Belz and Jayden Jones with Heat Transfer in Metals, sophomore Emery Robles with Effect of Temperature on Ants, and juniors Brenda Beyer and Cayden Turner with Effects of Glyphosate. Third place in each division received $50 with winners eighth grader Shelby Slavinski with Corn Collision, freshmen Rudy Mesa and Akshar Patel with Efficiency of Gas Fuels, and junior Pablo Esteban with Particle-Wave Duality. Winning Grand Champion was junior Reagan Moon, who received a scholarship of $1,000.
