McMullen County’s Makinna Serrata added two more medals to her collection over the weekend.

Serrata, a senior, placed second in the long jump and triple jump at the UIL State Track and Field Championships at Mike A. Myers Stadium in Austin. Classmate Hallie Taylor finished sixth in the 100 hurdles to cap her career.

Serrata had a jump of 17-7 in the long jump Friday night to earn the silver medal. Sydney Ritter of Groom won the event with a distance of 18-3.75. The top three finishers, which included Anton’s Kaitlyn Clardy (17-6.25), all bested the previous Class 1A record of 17-4.75.

Ritter and Serrata also finished first and second in the triple jump Saturday. Serrata took the silver after jumping 36-1.75. Ritter won with a jump of 37-7.5.

Taylor ran a 17.24 in the 100 hurdles Saturday.

Menard freshman Alexandra Hensley set a new 1A record, winning the event in 15.67.

McMullen County athletic director Tony Taylor said the two seniors’ influence went well beyond the track.

“These two young ladies have been the backbone of a great deal of our athletic success, not only this year but for the last three years,” he said. “We will sorely miss these two for their leadership and competitive drive in volleyball, basketball and track.”

Serrata and Taylor closed their athletic careers with deep postseason runs in three sports. Both were all-state selections for volleyball after making the Region IV-1A final.

In basketball the seniors led McMullen County to a 29-3 record after reaching the regional quarterfinals. Serrata was named all-state, and Taylor was all-region.

“My two ‘daughters,’ as I like to say, have left a mark that will be hard to match for future Cowgirls,” Tony Taylor said. “But they have paved the way for others to see and travel, as far as wins and playoff berths, with their work ethic, competitiveness and dedication. As I stated at Parents Night during basketball, I love these two and will miss them dearly.  Take a bow, you two. You certainly deserve it.”
